Founded in 1252, the Musée Unterlinden houses an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
It houses masterpieces of Western art, including the Issenheim Altarpiece, the Dominican Altarpiece by Martin Schongauer and the Polyptic by Nicolas de Haguenau.
The museum also has an important archaeological collection.
The museum also holds collections of decorative and contemporary art, including works by Monet, Picasso and Dubuffet.
In 1923 the famous painter and illustrator Jean-Jacques Waltz succeeded his father and became curator of the museum.
