Born Conrad on 17 April 1942 in Soulz (Haut-Rhin). In 1957, Katia Krafft passed the entrance exam to the Ecole Normale. Then in 1969, for his first work in volcanology, he was awarded a professional master's degree in geochemistry. He was born on 25 March 1946 in Mulhouse, France. Maurice Krafft was less than seven years old when the Stromboli was first built. At the age of 15, he became a member of the Societé Générale de France and in 1970 obtained a master's degree in geology from the University of Strasbourg. Katia and Maurice met at university in 1966 and married in 1970. In 1968 they founded the Centre de Volcanologie Vulcain in Cernay and published their first book in 1971. They both died on 3 June 1991 by a flow from Mount Unzen, which is located in Japan.
